The Spectacular Monarch Butterfly Migration!

Every fall, the great migration of the eastern monarch butterfly begins in the breeding grounds of southern Canada and northeastern United States for a 3,000 km journey to the wintering grounds in the mountains of central Mexico.  The monarchs congregate in dense clusters in Mexico from November until March when they begin their journey north again to find milkweed plants in Texas to lay the eggs of the next generation.   The eastern United States is repopulated with monarchs as the new generation continues to move north and produces two or three more summer generations before the fall generation begins the trip back to Mexico. This amazing migration occurs without parental guidance and is thought to be genetically inherited.
